If you want to be valued for your skills, be a plumber

If you want to be valued for your skills, be a plumber!

A female coworker thought she was talented, and deserved a better role. Few years ago, she brought this story in a mentoring session seeking advice on how she could ask for a different, and potentially better role. It was then, I heard one of the male mentors say this.

I was puzzled and disturbed with his advice. I reached out to him afterwards, and asked if he would give the same advice to a male coworker. He gave me the universal answer "it depends". I guess, it made it clear that my respect for this man was now a thing of past.

Today,  coincidentally I shared my own version with my niece, and this is how it went "If you want to be valued for your skills, get skilled at being kind to yourself, and ignoring men who suggest you to be a plumber!"
